How to Sell Yourself in an Online Interview

You have an interview scheduled for the job you really want so now is the time to show them what you can do and sell your skills. Your goal is to show them you are the right person for the job and convince them that hiring you is the best decision to make. 

Preparing for the interview is the next step up from your application. You need to know how to promote yourself in the right way to close on your next job. The hiring manager has already shown interest in your profile and is curious to learn more about you. You’ve probably checked some of their boxes already, but now it’s time to make sure you tick all of them. 

First impressions count

Appearances are a huge part of the instant sorting process we go through when deciding whether we will like or trust a person. It takes someone just four seconds to decide whether they like another person. It takes a person just a tenth of a second to decide how trustworthy you are. Altogether, you have 23 seconds to make a great impression. After that, it’s hard to change their perception about you. 

Making a good first impression gets harder with a remote interview as many of the initial cues we use aren’t there because of the lack of physical co-location. So, start by “looking the part”. As part of your research about the company, you should take a deeper look at the company’s culture and try to understand how people behave and usually dress. You need to elevate this, cause how you dress says something about how you value the interview. If you’re poorly dressed in a dirty t-shirt, they will probably conclude on the fact that this interview isn’t important to you. If their Instagram shows them dressed quite business casual, make sure you wear a shirt for the job interview. A tie will up the ante. 

Smile when you greet the interviewers, make sure you get everyone’s name and their position at the company, and don’t be afraid to clarify if you mis-hear. 

Be confident - you know your stuff and this interview is to show them what you can do. Appearing relaxed and confident in the interview will be encouraging to the interviewer. 

Practice your pitch

You normally have the opportunity to introduce yourself in an interview so spend a bit of time practising what to say. The best introductions will showcase you, your experience and your background in under 60 seconds. Make your introduction align with what the role description says and what their company culture is to make the best possible impression. You should also make sure to elaborate on why your skills and experience could be valuable and interesting to them, and not just on why this job is important or interesting to you. 

A pitch should be tailored to the interview to cover off the details of the role and the company, so each one should be different. Read their mission statement, news and social media to find out what their business is all about, who their stakeholders are, who the team is, and any updates. 

Prepare examples of your experience

Any good interviewer will go through your resume in detail. They’ll want to know what you did in your previous roles and at your former companies so preparing examples will help you get ahead. 

Show how you solved problems, how you overcame challenges and what you achieved. It’s important to show them how you did something, as well as the end results. For example, talk through how you communicated with the team, the tools you used and how you managed the client. Use numbers to show your results, for example, what the ROI was. Numbers can quantify your output. 

Interviewers are looking for skilled people who can do the work and do it well, but who can also work with other people efficiently and effectively. Especially as a remote worker, you know there are challenges that aren’t with on-site workers, and communication is very important. Show that you can overcome these challenges, and tell them how you did it. 

Write a list of questions 

It’s important to show the interviewing team that you’re interested in the role. They want you to delve deeper into the role and the company, so ask them questions. Here’s your chance to get to know the team, the people, the job and where the company is going. 

Write a list of questions and keep them close to hand during the interview so you can refer to them as you talk. Some good tips of questions could be to ask about how the team collaborates on a daily basis, what will be expected of you in the role, how is the roadmap looking moving forward, what does the company want to achieve over the next 3-5 years and so on.
