Remote working is the dream, offering better work-life balance than many in-office roles. No more long commutes into work, usually less distractions (children and pets not counted), and more time spent with your family. Remote working is good for companies too. Nicholas Bloom, a professor at Stanford University in California and James Liang, CEO of Tripp.com Group conducted a study that found just one day working at home per week increased productivity by 13%.
Remote working is on the rise, and if you’ve decided that the remote life is for you, here’s how to find a role at companies recruiting tech talent.
Have the right skills for remote working
It’s time to do some self-reflection. First, break down your skill set to understand what you can offer remote companies, such as project management skills, languages (spoken and programming), account management, and client services.
Next, go through your soft skill set. This includes your communication with others, whether you can be autonomous, self-motivation, and trustworthiness.
Once you have your list of the above, go through and find examples to demonstrate you can deliver. It’s great to have a list of what you can do, but you also need to prove that you can do that job. Remote companies recruiting tech talent often work differently, with the focus on your output and delivery rather than your time in the office.
Understand the industry
Start looking at remote working job descriptions to understand what companies are looking for and find the roles interesting to you. Do your skills match up with what they want? Your resume ideally should reflect the knowledge and experience that the companies are looking for. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the experience they’re looking for as there are other ways to prove you’re right for a role.
Now is the time to start any plugging gaps in your skill set and building up your resume so that it looks great to the hiring manager recruiting tech talent. For example, make sure you know the right programming languages, get a qualification in project management, build up your knowledge in a particular sector. Create sample code and post it on sites like CodePen.
Discover the tools used by remote teams and make sure you skill up on using them. Global companies use a range of platforms to stay in touch with other, including communication platforms such as Slack, project management ones like Asana, Monday or Trello, and time management such as Clockify.
Finally, create a portfolio of your best work that you can share with prospective employers, it can be a website or a Google document with links to your project. Where possible, include the brief and provide an explanation of your contribution to the project, along with any challenges you faced and overcame.
Your portfolio should show how you work, your self-motivation and your pro-activeness - all of which are very attractive qualities to a potential employer. Don’t be discouraged from applying for a role due to lack of experience if you can show the above. Celebrate your successes and be proud of what you’ve achieved.
Polish the resume
Your resume and cover letter are your way into the next company, they are the first things the company sees from and about you and so you need to create a great pitch about yourself. Create an elevator pitch about yourself–what are your key skills? Why should someone hire you? Then research the client and note their successes and challenges. Find the overlap between you and the company and show where you can add value and how your skills will help them. Highlight any of your work experience which will interest them. Convince them you are a person worth considering.
Writing a cover letter isn’t easy and will take some time, but it’s worth it to get it right.
Your resume needs to show off your experience and skills. This is where the hiring manager will dig in to find what you’ve done, where you’ve done it and how long for. Use bullet points for important information, list your key skills and achievements, and don't forget to include your education and additional courses. There are plenty of resume templates out there and pick one that can be simply read. The recruiter wants to access information about you and not be distracted by additional things.
